 Basics of Network Attached Storage

Network-attached storage (NAS) is hard disk storage that is set up with its own network address rather than being attached to the department computer that is serving applications to a network's workstation users. By removing storage access and its management from the department server, both application programming and files can be served faster because they are not competing for the same processor resources. The network-attached storage device is attached to a local area network (typically, an Ethernet network) and assigned an IP address. File requests are mapped by the main server to the NAS file server.

SMB (Small and medium business) has typically the same requirement as that of enterprises even though on a smaller scale. They need to basically share the file and print resources available on their LAN to make their employees collaborate in meeting the objectives of organization. While this can typically be rendered by commonly available hardware and software in the market, it is becoming critical for organizations of various sizes to ensure that their “urgent” IT investments does not result in an wastage of their investment over the longer run. With this in the background, it has become critical that organizations move over from direct attached storage in their networks to Network Attached Storage. Fortunately, this movement of storage from direct connection to network connection comes in without any overheads – administration time and any additional cost that might be required.

A NAS device simply plugs into a network and operates at the maximum speed available in the network backbone. While DAS increases the storage capacity for a single node in the network, NAS storage subsystem increases the storage capacity of all nodes in the network. This is also applicable when the individual nodes are running different Operating systems on each of them and still a NAS device would be able to seamlessly share the storage space across the various nodes. An added benefit is that the entire NAS device can be managed centrally from a single system in the network with or without any specific software to be installed. Deploying a NAS system saves an organization from a costly investment in hardware, software/OS license fees as well as dedicated support staff that might be required.

The following table gives us a comparative chart in the features offered by a typical file server as compared to that of a NAS file server:

Typical Server
SANAT Storage Solution
  • There is a dedicated costly hardware with a separate OS that needs to be procured and installed
  • Cost effective solution that encompasses hardware, firmware and management software
  • Server is generic hardware piece that needs to have its computing capabilities shared among all tasks and not just I/O
  • Firmware is typically tuned and hardened for performing quick I/O cycles
  • OS licenses / Software licenses are required to run on the server
  • NO specific licenses or CALs required for running this storage subsystem
  • Storage space can be shared only by nodes running the same operating system
  • Almost all the kinds of hosts running Windows, Linux, UNIX are supported to be sharing the storage space from this subsystem
  • Experienced administrators are required for maintaining the server Operating systems
  • The complete administration and configuration is done by using a standard Web browser interface
  • Hot swap of the hard drives is not supported by default in all systems
  • Hot swappability is a minimum feature available minimizing system downtime
  • No additional software available for taking point in time copies to insure against accidental deletion / corruption of data
  • Comes with SnapPict ™ - a feature of taking point in time copies of data and recoverable with a few mouse clicks
  • Backup / Restore software has to be additionally purchased
  • StorOS comes with an automatic desktop / server backup/restore software module that is an optional module without individual CAL requirement.
Salient features of SANAT StorOS NAS Solution:

  • StorOS provides the actual raw capacity to be used by our customers – the firmware and software are part of a separate storage media
  • Easy to use, administer and configure the storage subsystem through an intuitive WEB browser interface
  • Point in time copies of the data can be taken to prevent accidental deletion or corruption of data
  • Highly secure feature – “Recycle bin” – is available to recover deleted files from the storage subsystem
  • Completely OS agnostic – can be used to access storage capacity from all kinds of machines: Windows flavors, LINUX, UNIX flavors et. al.
  • RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 1+0, 5+0 levels supported
  • Multiple GigE card interfaces for redundancy / load balancing network traffic
  • Supports all industry standard modes of authentication: Windows Active Directory, LDAP, NIS as well as ‘UNIX-like' local user authentication
  • Storage policy allocation mechanism where policies can be defined for allocated storage spaces between users or groups of users.
  • Protocols supported: SMB/CIFS, NFS, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP
  • Works with heterogeneous backup / restore software available commercially in the industry as well as have a CAL-free Automatic desktop/server backup/restore software available as an optional StorOS module.
